On January 27, 2022, the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant hosted a ceremony of laying a commemorative capsule dedicated to the start of construction of deep modernization facilities of JSC "OSSZ".

On November 16, 2017, at the suggestion of the head of the State Commission on Preparations for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Karelia, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Platonovich Patrushev, the President of Russia gave instructions to carry out a deep modernization of the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant with the creation of the country's first digital shipyard on its basis.

The project was developed by the St. Petersburg State Maritime Technical University in cooperation with the joint-stock company "Center for Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Technology" and the Design Firm "Soyuzproektverf". The design work was funded by the federal state unitary enterprise "Rosmorport".

In June 2021, the project successfully passed state examination, and by a decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, budget investments in the amount of over five billion rubles were allocated from the federal budget during 2021-2024.

The general contractor for carrying out construction and installation works on modernization facilities has been identified as a Public law company "Military Construction Company", with which a contract has already been concluded for carrying out construction and installation works.

The company will have to perform a significant amount of work within the framework of the project, including the construction of a block of housing workshops with an area of more than twenty-five thousand square meters, a new checkpoint, treatment facilities, a data processing center and a number of other technological facilities and infrastructure facilities.

Significant support for the project from the Security Council of the Russian Federation, the Board of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Transport of Russia, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia, the Ministry of Finance of Russia, the Federal Agency for Sea and River Transport, FSUE "Rosmorport" and unconditional support from the Head of the Republic of Karelia, state authorities of the Republic of Karelia, as well as the local self-government bodies of the Petrozavodsk City District eventually allowed to start the practical implementation of the project.

The ceremony was attended by Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev, Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov, Member of the Board of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation Vladimir Pospelov, Director General of FSUE Rosmorport Alexander Smirnov, Rector of St. Petersburg State Technical University Gleb Turichin, Director General of JSC Center for Shipbuilding Technology and Ship Repair; Mikhail Alexandrov, Deputy Head of the Federal Agency for Sea and River Transport Zahariy Dzhioev, representatives of federal ministries and departments, legislative and executive authorities of the Republic of Karelia, Head of Petrozavodsk City District, representatives of the Federal Agency for Sea and River Transport, FSUE "Rosmorport" and Onega GCC.

During the ceremony, the Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov presented the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev with the highest award of the Republic of Karelia, the Order of the Sampo for his great personal contribution to the socio-economic development of the Republic of Karelia.

As a sign of the official start of the construction of deep modernization facilities of the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and the Director of JSC "Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant" carried out the laying of a commemorative capsule, inside which a digital 3D model of the plant is placed on an electronic carrier after its modernization.
