On December 9, 2022, the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant in Petrozavodsk (Republic of Karelia) launched the krabolov "Captain Egorov". This is the second vessel of the design series CSa 5712LS, which the plant is building by order of the largest Far Eastern crab fishing company "Russian Crab". The construction is carried out within the framework of the state program of investment quotas aimed at updating the domestic fishing fleet and increasing the efficiency of the development of valuable national bioresources.

Contracts on the construction of seven vessels intended for the capture and transportation of live crab were signed by JSC Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant and the Russian Crab Group of Companies on January 31, 2020. Currently, all seven vessels are at different stages of construction. The lead vessel of the Captain Alexandrov series was launched on January 27, 2022. The laying of the keel of the Captain Egorov took place on December 1, 2020.

The event was attended by the Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov, representatives of relevant ministries and departments of the region, heads of the shipyard and the Russian Crab Group of Companies. The godmother of the vessel was the Deputy Head of the Republic of Karelia — Head of the Administration of the Head of the Republic of Karelia Tatiana Ignatieva.

During the ceremony, employees of the enterprise who made a significant contribution to the development of the republican shipbuilding industry were awarded Honorary Badges of the Head of the Republic of Karelia "For contribution to the development of the Republic of Karelia".
"The feelings are overwhelming – quite recently at this shipyard we launched the lead ship of a series of crabbers, and today we are launching the second one. During the construction process, there was a search for technical solutions, clarification of the project, but in fact, these vessels are a new trend in shipbuilding, because crabbers had not been built before. We will move on in our city of five seas, we will build more modern vessels of all kinds, this is very important for the economy of the city," Artur Parfenchikov, the Head of the Republic of Karelia, said in his welcoming speech.

"Events like today are significant steps in a large project to upgrade the Russian fishing fleet, in which our enterprises are participants. The creation of each new vessel makes domestic marine fishing more sustainable, strengthens shipbuilding competencies, and stimulates the development of related industries. Despite external challenges, it is important to continue building a new technological fleet, not to stop and not to slow down," said Alexander Sapozhnikov, CEO of Russian Crab Group.

The crab fishing vessels of the CSa 5712LS project series are designed for catching and transporting live crab. The technical equipment of the vessels will increase the volume of live products transported, increase its safety indicators; improve the seaworthiness necessary to work in difficult weather conditions of the Bering, Okhotsk and Japanese Seas basins. The vessels of the series have innovative solutions for the Russian crab industry, including the RSW system for monitoring and maintaining the temperature of water, air in tanks and holds, oxygen content in water and ammonia detection, as well as a telemetry system that allows you to transmit RSW system data both to the bridge and to the shore.
The new crabbers are distinguished from the ships of the current fleet by the ice class of the Ice2 hull and mechanisms, the presence of a two-level hold for transporting live crab in stainless steel tanks, twice the area of the fishing deck and the number of fishing equipment, modern engines with low fuel consumption and low toxicity of exhaust gases.
The commissioning of new vessels will allow the Russian Crab Group to systematically replace the vessels of the existing fleet.

FOR REFERENCE:
The crab-fishing vessel was named after the famous Far Eastern captain Nikolai Alexandrovich Egorov (1906-1979). In the early 30s, after graduating from marine college, he went to crab fishing as an assistant captain. In 1933, he was appointed captain-manager of the Koryak crab cannery, which was part of the crab canneries trust. In the first fishing voyage, he brought his smelter to the forefront, and two years later doubled the production of canned crab. In 1936, Egorov became one of the best crabbers in the country and was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and a year later received the second order – "Badge of Honor".

The main dimensions of the vessel:

  • Length — 57.70 m.
  • Width — 12.60 m.
  • Autonomy — 40 days.
  • The full speed is 12.6 knots.
  • The power of the main engine is 1620 kW.
  • The power of the bow thruster is 400 kW.
  • The crew capacity is 24 people.
  • The volume of tanks for transporting live crab is 440 m3.
  • The capacity for a live crab is 110 tons.

GC "Russian Crab" is one of the leading crab fishing companies in Russia, the largest in the Far East. In 2022, the group owns the rights to extract 11.8 thousand tons of crab in the subzones of the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Since 2020, the company has been implementing a large—scale program for the construction of 10 crab vessels: seven of them are designed for catching and transporting live crab, three more are crab processors for catching and processing the catch into finished products at the on-board factory. Construction contracts were concluded following the results of the 2019 auction on securing and granting a quota share, at which the Russian Crab Group acquired 10 lots for the production of commercial crab.
